RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Children and adolescents (<18 years old) who sustain a spinal cord injury (SCI) should ideally be managed in specialized rehabilitation services. This project aims to describe the organization of pediatric SCI in ten rehabilitation units in seven countries and to qualitatively explore psychosocial aspects of adolescents living with SCI. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional project is planned, using quantitative (web survey) and qualitative (interview) methods in ten rehabilitation units from Norway, Sweden, United States, Israel, PR China, Russia and Palestine. Individual interviews will be conducted with ≥20 adolescents aged 13-17 years at least 6 months' post rehabilitation. RESULTS: Units involved will be described and compared, according to funding, attachment to an acute SCI unit, catchment area, number of beds, admittance and discharge procedures, availability of services, staff/patient ratio, content and intensity of rehabilitation programs, length of stay, measurement methods, follow-up services, health promotion services, and pediatric SCI prevention acts. The semi-structured interview guide will include experiences from acute care and primary rehabilitation, daily life, school, contact with friends, leisure time activities, peers, physical and psychological health, and the adolescents' plans for the future. CONCLUSION: Based on the present protocol, this project is likely to provide new insight and knowledge on pediatric SCI rehabilitation and increase the understanding of pediatric SCI in adolescents and their families internationally.

Green syntheses of metallic nanoparticles using plant extracts as effective sources of reductants and stabilizers have attracted decent popularity due to their non-toxicity, environmental friendliness and rapid nature. The current study demonstrates the ecofriendly, facile and inexpensive synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AP-AgNPs) using the extract of aerial parts of the Anthemis pseudocotula Boiss. plant (AP). Herein, the aerial parts extract of AP performed a twin role of a reducing as well as a stabilizing agent. The green synthesized AP-AgNPs were characterized by several techniques such as XRD, UV-Vis, FT-IR, TEM, SEM and EDX. Furthermore, the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of as-prepared AP-AgNPs were examined by a standard two-fold microbroth dilution method and tissue culture plate methods, respectively, against several Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains and fungal species such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR-PA) and Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-AB), methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and Candida albicans (C. albicans) strains. The antimicrobial activity results clearly indicated that the Gram-negative bacteria MDR-PA was most affected by AgNPs as compared to other Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and fungi C. albicans. Whereas, in the case of antibiofilm activity, it has been found that AgNPs at 0.039 mg/mL, inhibit biofilms formation of Gram-negative bacteria i.e., MDR-PA, E. coli, and MDR-AB by 78.98 ± 1.12, 65.77 ± 1.05 and 66.94 ± 1.35%, respectively. On the other hand, at the same dose (i.e., 0.039 mg/mL), AP-AgNPs inhibits biofilm formation of Gram-positive bacteria i.e., MRSA, S. aureus and fungi C. albicans by 67.81 ± 0.99, 54.61 ± 1.11 and 56.22 ± 1.06%, respectively. The present work indicates the efficiency of green synthesized AP-AgNPs as good antimicrobial and antibiofilm agents against selected bacterial and fungal species.

INTRODUCTION: Botulinum toxin (BTX) and dermal fillers (DFs) are considered as quick and effective non-surgical solutions for enhancing facial appearance. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate dentists' knowledge and attitude towards using Botulinum toxin and DFs in dental treatment in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Five hundred questionnaires were distributed in Riyadh city to government and private sectors to determine awareness and attitude towards using Botulinum toxin and DFs in dental clinics for therapeutic and aesthetics uses. RESULTS: Botulinum toxin: A total of 1.2% is practising it. Only 34.8% could recognise its composition. Use of Botulinum toxin in wrinkle reduction was the most reported (73.7%). A total of 81.1% believed that Botulinum toxin has side effects; allergic reaction was the most reported (57.5%). A total of 47.8% reported that higher doses are more toxic, and that males need higher doses than females (10.2%). Dermal fillers: A total of 0.9% is practising it. The most reported type (47.8%) was Fat transfer. Filling of wrinkles was the most reported use (57.8%). A total of 69% believed that DFs has side effects; allergic reaction was the most reported (53.4%). Attitude: A total of 37.8% would like to practise Botulinum toxin/DFs, mostly for aesthetic dental reason. However, 60.2% rejected the idea, mainly due to lack of knowledge and experience (44%). CONCLUSION: Limited knowledge regarding Botulinum toxin and dermal fillers is found among dentists in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This study was designed to evaluate color differences (DE) between intended and fabricated shades of various metal-ceramic complexes using visual and instrumental shade determination. Forty-two master disks were made to represent every tab in two shade guides. The shades of the master disks were determined visually and instrumentally. Accordingly, 84 experimental disks were fabricated. Color measurements of the master and fabricated disks were performed using a spectrophotometer. Visual shade determination showed a significantly lower DE value than the instrumental shade determination. However, all groups showed DE values exceeding 2.75, which could be considered perceivable and therefore clinically unacceptable. A reliable shade duplication of an existing metal-ceramic restoration cannot be ensured, regardless of the method of shade assessment.
